Q: What is MasterCard PayPass?
A: MasterCard PayPass is a new "contactless" way to pay. It's like having exact change wherever you go. A simple tap of your card is all it takes to pay at checkout.*
Q: How do I benefit?
A: There are many advantages to MasterCard PayPass:
It's like having exact change wherever you go, so you don't have to worry about carrying around a lot of cash or fishing for coins.
You are in control because your MasterCard PayPass card never leaves your hand at checkout.
With MasterCard PayPass you get better record keeping of all your purchases than using cash for those small everyday items.
It's fast and ideal at places where speed is essential, like at fast food restaurants, grocery stores, movie theatres and gas stations.
Q: Where can I get my own MasterCard PayPass card?
A: To apply for a MasterCard PayPass card, contact participating financial institutions (card issuers) listed on our Web site. See List of Cards.
Q: Where can I use my MasterCard PayPass?
A:
Anywhere you see this symbol at checkout, you can tap to pay with your MasterCard PayPass card. This includes fast food restaurants, grocery stores, movie theatres and gas stations. See Where to Shop.
Q: How do I pay with MasterCard PayPass?
A: To make a purchase, simply tap your MasterCard PayPass card on the "contactless" payment reader at checkout of participating retail locations. See Where to Shop.
Q: How close does the "tap" have to be to the checkout reader?
A: Typically, at checkout when you tap, your card must be within an inch or two of the "contactless symbol" on the payment reader on the counter. However, if you have more than one MasterCard PayPass card in your wallet, you should remove the specific card you wish to use to pay.
Q: How will purchases appear on my monthly statement?
A: Purchases made with a MasterCard PayPass card will be displayed on your statement just like any other purchase you make with a regular card.
Q: How does it work?
A: MasterCard PayPass uses a hidden embedded computer chip and radio frequency antennas. After you tap your MasterCard PayPass card at checkout, payment details are sent wirelessly to the MasterCard network. Moments after you tap, you will receive payment confirmation and you are on your way.
Q: Do I have to treat my MasterCard PayPass card in any special way?
A: Treat your MasterCard PayPass card as you would any credit card. Always know where your MasterCard PayPass card is and keep it in a safe place. Check often to make sure none or your cards are missing. And be sure to keep a record of all your card numbers, expiration dates, and emergency phone numbers in a safe place.
Q: Is there a battery?
A: There is no battery used to activate your MasterCard PayPass card.
Q: Is it safe?
A: With secure encryption technology and Zero Liability protection, MasterCard PayPass is as safe as your regular MasterCard Card.
You are in control — your MasterCard PayPass card never leaves your hands to make a payment.
No accidental payments — your MasterCard PayPass card must be extremely close to the reader at checkout to work.
Not billed twice — even if you tap more than once at checkout, you'll only get billed once for your purchase.
Q: Why aren't signatures required?
A: To ensure that using MasterCard PayPass is as simple and convenient as cash, retailers/merchants that accept MasterCard PayPass do not require you to sign for purchases under $50. However, for your protection, purchases over the pre-specified floor limit generally require a signature.*
Q:What do I do if my MasterCard PayPass card has been lost or stolen?
A: If you have lost your MasterCard PayPass card or suspect unauthorized activity on your account, stop using your MasterCard PayPass card and contact the financial institution that issued your card immediately. If you don't know your card issuer's number — not a problem. The MasterCard Global Service™ team is available 24/7 to assist you. Contact Us.
